A Day at Mount Diablo

Saturday, June 3, 2017

We had kind of a slow morning getting around.  Brent gave us a tour of the apartment complex and then we made a quick stop at the convenience store next to Brent's apartment for picnic food.
It's a huge complex. There is parking on the ground
floor, 2 pools, BBQ grills, lots of sidewalks and
beautiful flowers.

Then, we headed out to Mount Diablo.  It was less than 20 miles and a beautiful drive.  As mountains go, Mount Diablo isn't especially tall--only 3,849 feet.  However, it is surrounded by low, rolling hills and broad, flat valleys, so the view from the summit is remarkable.  There were hundreds of people on bicycles on the narrow road.  The road up to the summit is very narrow and curvy.  It was a pretty drive up the mountain.

Parking was pretty limited but we finally found a spot.  The views up here are awesome!  There is also a VIsitor's Center here.

It was a beautiful day and the views up here were amazing!
Beautiful!
We left this spot to find the picnic area.  I think everybody had the same idea.  But, we found a spot and enjoyed our lunch then drove back up to the top.  No parking spots available this time and we had to park on down the road and hike up the mountain.

Inside the building, this post is at the summit of the mountain.  The sign at the bottom reads: "The mound of fractured bedrock at your feet is the actual summit of Mount Diablo.  The floor of the building was constructed around this point to allow you to stand on top of one of California's most prominent peaks."

After this, it was back down the mountain.  The bicycles on the way down were flying!  It was pretty scary to be driving behind them, afraid one would crash.  Back home, Jackie and I made taco salad for supper and then just enjoyed catching up.  It's been a great day.
